I am doing research on my family. I believe that Robert A. Fleming is my great-great-grandfather. He may have built the hotel Josephine. I know that he had one child Lola who was born around 1860. She eventually went to live with my great-uncle James David Williford in Akron, Ohio where she died in 1933. I would appreciate any information anyone may have on this family. Thanks.

I was one of the coaches for the 9 and 10 year old all stars from Valley Al that played in the sub district tour. last week and I wanted to let you know how much we loved having the chance to come to your town and play baseball. Although we only got a chance to play 3 games before being sent home our kids had a great time.. I wanted to THANK YOU all for your hospitality it was great. Thank you for feeding us each night. Hello everyone. I was born in Union Springs in 1961. Cora and Willie Ivery are my parents. I now live in Stone Mountain Georgia where I have been for the past 12 years. I occasionally visit Union Springs and hope to relocate there in my retirement years when the children are grown. I still have family there. Josephine Tuggle-Williams and Lina Mae Johnson are my Grandmothers. Comments...I am very sorry to read of the passing of Mrs. Louise Williams of New Town. Miss Louise (as I knew her) and Mr. Johnny were great friends of my family. I remember her love for fishing, and the way she would yell up the hill to my Aunt Bee. The passing of Miss Louise takes away another link to my history. Now, I have but one stop I must make in New Town when I come home. Thanks to Herald for the including the names of Mr.General Martin (my Grandfather) and Mr. Joe Jesse Owens in a recent article. Comments...Regardless of what the calendar says, spring has officially begun--at least for me. Reason being? I just set out my two "Bush Goliath" tomato plants, shipped all the way from Bonnie Plant Farm, in Union Springs, to Houston, Texas. I'm like my momma, Mary Dervin, and according to her, spring began when she and the weathermen determined that nothing but good weather was ahead, and when Bonnie Plant Farm put out their plants. The good weather that we've been having lately, and the sight of those plants arriving, was my signal that it was time for spring planting. The sight of those plants also brought back good memories of when my brother's friend, James "Grease Monkey" Johnson, told him about working at Bonnie Plant. After I saw how much fun Joe and "Grease" were having that summer, I begged Momma to let me go--she did. It didn't take me long to catch on to grabbing a handful of damp, sawdust-like matter, selecting a plant, embedding it into the mixture, wrapping the brown paper around it, and then securing it with a rubber band before setting it into a crate. What fun! Working while laughing and talking with most of my friends--and getting paid at the same time. What a wonderful memory. Each time I buy my plants shipped from home, I think of that summer with a smile on my face and in my heart. At any rate, my "Bonnie" plants are in the ground and all is well in my universe.

Comments...I must admit to major mistakes in my comment regarding "Meet the New Columnist for the Herald." I made a mistake in transposing Bertha Coleman Poe's email address. I should have given it as: Blcpoe@aol.com. (Forgive me, but support her.) My second mistake was not to have capitalized the word "county" in Bullock County. But that just proves how imperfect I am. However,it also proves my desire to support worthwhile causes, such as contributing to this web site. (And while I'm at it, I made another serious mistake in an earlier article, but I won't tell if Sco Nance won't--he said I just may have created a legend.) So now you know to count on Bertha and Sco for facts and you know who for you know what.
