To The Bullock County Heritage Book Committee:
Congratulations on the outstanding job of putting
together the long awaited heritage book. What a
wonderful collection of county and family histories.
I was not born or raised in Union Springs, but feel
a close kinship to the area because of the many
enjoyable summers that I spent there visiting my
grandparents, Obie and Eliza Tabor Davis and other
aunts, uncles and cousins. Unfortunately, I did not
submit the histories of my Davis and Dean families
who migrated from Barbour County to Midway and Union
Springs by 1900. Nor did I submit the histories on
my Berry, Greenwood, Renfroe Stinson or Tabor
families who had been in Union Springs since at
least 1870. During my visit this past August I
donated a copy of my family history booklet to the
Union Springs Library. I also had the opportunity to
visit with cousins Elizabeth Cope and Henry and Ida
Davis, Mr. Hodge, Funeral Director, Carter Funeral
Home, and the renowned Bullock Historian, Mr. Dean
Spratlan. I am a subscriber to the Union Springs
Herald and enjoy reading about the progress that is
taking place in the area. Keep up the great job.

Thank you Union Springs. I am proud to call you
home, and praise you for what you gave to me. The
ones who molded my life have long since past, so I
write this to my home town. Thank you for teaching
me it is not where you are from that matters but
where you are going. It is not how you begin but how
you finish. It is not what you have but who you have
in your life. I know these things because of what I
learned in Union Springs. In Union Springs I was
loved and encouraged. Last night something wonderful
happen in my life, the people of my school district
(63,000) elected me to the school board. Thanks

I am researching the kids of Sterling Foster
Jr.'s brother. His name was Robert Magruder Foster.
Born May 13, 1852 in Union Springs. He married
Lizzie L. Carpenter in Keokuk, Iowa October 19,
1881. He died November 01, 1930 and was buried in
St. Louis. Lizzie was the daughter of my great Uncle
Dr. Abram M. Carpenter. Lizzie was buried in
Ferncliff Cemetery-Hartsdale, NY. Don't have a clue
why she was buried there. There is a vacant plot
next to her husband's grave in St. Louis in
Bellefontaine Cemetery. Their children were Sterling
C. Foster, Robert M. Foster, Jr and Virginia Lee
Foster. Virginia married a Frenchman and lived in
France before the Nazis invaded. And were in New
York around 1940. Sterling moved to Oregon and
Robert moved to Helena, Arkansas. Does anyone have
anything on this line?

I attended and graduated from The old Carver High
School in Union Springs. I wrote and recited the
Class Poem at the Class Night program prior to
graduation on May 29, 1959. Mr. Warren was the
Principal at that time. I lived with an aunt, Sarah
Jackson on Chunnenuggee Avenue in the neighborhood
known as "The Grove." I remember a young lady who
would play simple duets on the piano with me at a
friend's house. If Geneva Pendleton is still around
I'd just like to say hello to her. Hello also to
Jackie Clark, "Cat" Youngblood and anyone else who
might remember me as "Jackyboy" rather than
Nathaniel Harris. I would like to hear from anyone
who was a member of the 1959 Carver Graduating
Class.

My name is Leola Cooks, and I have lived in Union
Springs all of my life. I have traveled outside
Alabama on several occasions, and have found Bullock
County to be one of the best places in the United
States to live.
I have often been asked why I have chosen to make
Union Springs my home because of the limited
opportunities for advancement here. I often reply
with the fact that living here has its advantages
and well as disadvantages. I have been fortunate to
find a job that I really enjoy doing at the Revenue
Commissioner's Office, where I've worked for the
past 18 years. I received my Bachelor of Science
Degree from Faulkner University, my certification in
Tax Administration from Auburn University Center for
Government Studies and am currently working toward
my Master's in Public Administration from Troy
University which proves that we do not have to place
restrictions or limitations on what we do or where
we go in life, because we chose to live in small
towns or cities.
I have found that life is what you make of it,
and it left up to us, not society, or our peers to
make the best of it. Also, I must add that the Cooks
Family will host their 2nd Family Reunion in July
2005, in Montgomery, Alabama, and if you are an heir
of Thomas (Tom) Cook, please contact me at (334)

This message is to thank all of my wonderful

Just to mention a few of the classmates who made
this possible and put this together. Neara Surles,

Rogers, Darryl Andrews, Wilbur Anderson, Clarence
Wheeler, Letty Foxx, Billy Parker and everyone else;
excuse me if I omitted anyone: This affair was
extremely wonderful from the beginning to the end. I
would encourage all of our classmates who did not
attend to really try and make the next one. Being
home for the short while was a blessing, like being
in a place you could never measure, because of its'
beauty and charm. The memories of this occasion will
stay with me forever. It was such a joy to have seen
all of you and I look forward in us repeating it in
the near future. Just thinking back when we were all
in school and having such a great time. Who ever

web page but very few names I recognize. Guess the
town has changed a bit since I left in 1942! When
did they move US 29 two blocks east of Prairie
Street? Too bad they didn't do it prior to cutting
down all the great oak trees on Prairie S. I was
still in Auburn [A.P.I.] when the Highway Dept moved
the Confederate memorial from the middle of Prairie
to the court house lawn [heard they later moved it
behind the Episcopal church]. "There goes the town"
I thought at that time. Glad it survived!!

Wow! What an impressive website!! What fond
memories I have of growing up in Union Springs... I
often share them with my sons and friends here in
Baton Rouge, LA. It's a very special place, unique
and a part of it is forever with you ... like it or
not. Bullock County High, Bullock Memorial, The Rec,
Fitzpatrick, Blues Old Stand, Hill 'n Dale ...
special memories of them all. I have been in BR
since 1979 and am now editor of a local city/social
magazine, InRegister. I have 3 sons, - Michael (23),
David (21) & Thomas (19). A special thank you to all
who paid tribute to my dad, Phil Richardson, when he
died Feb. 23, 2003. Your kind words, letters, cards,
etc. helped my family through a most difficult time.
Union Springs was not his native home, but he
greatly loved this town and the woman from here that
captured his heart back in high school - Sarah. If
you're ever in Baton Rouge, look me up. I'd love to
hear from you ... especially any of you

My husband visited Union Springs in February of
last year in hope of finding information about my
great grandfather, Jessie Owens who was alleged to
have been a run-away slave. Our effort did not
result in any information about his roots. We did
meet a couple of individuals with the surname of
Owens, but there was no one who had any recollection
of him. Jessie Ownes died on 5/6/1954 at the
approximate age of 103. He lived his early adult
life in New Orleans, LA but later resided in
Gueydan, LA marrying Mary Senegal and having five
children. His children were Georgia, Robert, Landry,
Nettie and Eula. Union Springs is a beautiful
historic town with the friendliest people in

Job well done!!! I am a mother of three that
currently resides in the Union Springs area. I am
also the mother of a 4th grade student. My daughters
teacher Mrs. Jill Hall also a Union Springs resident
assigned homework that lead me to this web site. As
a Bullock Countian and mother I would like to
compliment on the educational information as well as
the great images that the web site provided. Keep up
the great work and wish my daughter well on her
assignment.

I am making a comment for the second time because
I am very impressed by what I have seen on this
website. I am, however, a bit disappointed that not
many people are using this site, I am at a loss as
to the reasons but I do hope more of us will visit
this site because it is indeed impressive.
And I would like to give a shout out to the Union
Springs High School class of 1973.

I love Union Springs. Everyone is so nice. The
beach is also lovely. The Chew n Chat is one of the
best chicken places I have ever eaten at. My husband
and I are going to bring our grandkids down during
the summer. They love the beach.

I'm looking for anyone who may have known the
Pritchetts or Raileys in the 1930's or 40's. My
Grandmother was Frances Pritchett. She was
married for a short time to a Harold Railey. If
anyone has ANY info on the Raileys, I would
greatly appreciate the help.....

I love your website. It was both informative
and picturesque. However, I noticed that your
business page contained a photo that I did not
see described anywhere on the website. I was
wondering if you could name it and its function
for me?

A good friend of mine is searching for a friend
in the military named VALENCIA SIMMONS. Although, I
have never met her, I hear excellent things about
how good she was to her homesick army friends and
how nice she is. The only information we have is she
might be stationed in Korea and she is from Alabama.
My friend is now stationed in Korea and would like
to be reacquainted with Valencia. We think she might
have gone to BCHS. I think she is 19 or 20. If
anyone knows Valencia, has any information like an
email address so I can get in contact with her or
anything of use PLEASE contact me. Thanks a lot
